[Cindy Sherman] has never tried to climb ladders. She does her work quietly, slowly and moves on. She’s extremely humble and supportive of other artists—in fact, she was the very first person to buy my work, back at Annina Nosei Gallery in 1995. She’s shy, but the images are animated. That’s when she acts out those personas—when she’s totally alone. When you see her, you can’t believe it’s the woman in the masterpieces.
